Humans are creatures of habit, but what happens when those habits actually harm us?
A few weeks back Facebook had a whistleblower step up and share some of these patterns and habits that seem to be recurring in young teens social media usage. The patterns and habits of going from a healthy eating recipe post, to a fad diet sales page happens within minutes of connecting with content.
When I was young this was a marketing tactic I started to notice on my personal Instagram page. I started following health and fitness accounts to get more ideas of workouts for the gym, it started out very innocently. A few before and after posts, a few workout videos and next thing I know I'm on my instagram explore page and I see all of these graphics “Skinny is better than…..” WTF?
I didn't want to be marketed by these types of ads, luckily at the time I was at JMU and my sorority was openly talking about eating disorders, it happened to be our philanthropy. I saw how much it can impact people.
This was actually one of the reasons why I waited/hesitated with starting Meraki Media Management. I didn't want to be known to work with a platform that could harm children, adults, everyone. So much so that I really contemplated it. I told myself when I was creating my first course I would share these negative thoughts that I had while I was using social media. I wanted people to know, they aren't alone, and they don't have to stand for this type of content!
